'86年、ヨーロッパ各国で高い評価を受けていたイギリスの劇団リンゼイ・ケンプ・カンパニーを初来日させ、「真夏の夜の夢」の公演を実現。演劇界、バレエ界、ファッション界に一大旋風を巻き起こす。その後もリンゼイ・ケンプ・カンパニーの来日公演を毎年プロデュースし続け、「真夏の夜の夢」のリバイバル、「フラワーズ」「ビッグ・パレード」「アリス」「ONNAGATA」「シンデレラ」を上演、各地で絶賛を博す。
'92年、ブロードウェイでミハイル・バレシニコフが、パリではロマン・ポランスキーが出演し絶賛された、スティーブン・バーコフ演出によるカフカの「変身」に宮本亜門、夏木マリを起用。オール日本人キャストで制作する。
'94年世界の演劇のメッカ、ロンドン・ウエスト・エンドに活動の拠点を移す。スティーブン・バーコフとの共同プロデュースによる「ブライトン・ビーチ・スカンバック」が英国で最初の作品となる。また日本人として初めて、英国プロデューサー協会=ソサエティ・オブ・ロンドン・シアターの会員に認定され、国際活動の場を確固たるものとする。
'95年、数多くのヒット曲で知られるナット・キング・コールの生涯を描いた「アンフォゲッタブル〜ナット・キング・コール・ストーリー」の日本公演を、続いてウエスト・エンド公演をプロデュース。この作品は世界的にも権威ある舞台芸術賞ローレンス・オリヴィエ賞ミュージカル部門で最優秀主演男優賞にノミネート。日本人が大きく関わったこの作品が、この名誉ある賞の候補に挙がるのは初めてのこと。オリヴィエ賞最優秀振付賞獲得作品「ホット・シュー・シャッフル」もこの年日本公演。
その後も、シドニーオリンピックで脚光を浴びたタップダンスショー「Tap Dogs」や、アカデミー賞受賞作品「Shine」のモデルとなった奇跡の天才ピアニスト「デヴィッド・ヘルフゴット」の2年連続コンサートをプロデュース。また、2年連続公演、日本全国約30箇所を制覇した、NYからの本場ゴスペル「グローリー・ゴスペル・シンガーズ」も不動の人気を得ている。 舞台への揺るぎない「志」と共に、現在も、日本、英国、そして世界中を行き来しながら、ミュージカル、バレエ、ダンス、コンサートなど舞台作品の数々をプロデュースし続けている。

Since 1983, Susumu Matahira has been introducing Japanese audience to many different areas of the performing arts from all over the world. He is now recognized as one of Japan's top producers. His work continues to cover a wide range of performers and is known throughout Japan for its high quality and adventurous approach.
In 1986, Matahira brought the British theatre company "The Lindsay Kemp Company" for the first time to Japan, and succeeded the performance, "The Midsummer Night's Dream", which had given a great influence on the theatre, ballet, and fashion as well. As he continued producing this company in Japan as an annual performance, "Flowers", "Big Parade", "Alice", "ONNAGATA", and "Cinderella", had become highly acclaimed in every city throughout Japan.
In 1992, Matahira produced the Japanese version of "Metamorphosis" where he used Amon Miyamoto, and Mari Natsuki for the cast, directed by Steven Berkoff which had become a high praise with Mikhail Baryshnikov for the Broadway, and Roman Polansky for the Paris production.
In 1994, Matahira moved his base to the Mecca of the theatre in the West end, London. The collaborative work with Steven Berkoff "The Brighton Beach Scumbags" made his first debut in England. Also, he was the first Japanese producer who was certified as a member of the Society of London Theatre, which had defined his worldwide activity of the theatre business.
In the following year in Japan, he produced "Unforgettable -The Nat King Cole Story-" known for various hit songs, then he made his debut as a solo producer in the West end as well. This resulted in the nomination for the best leading musical actor for one of the world famous performing arts award, Laurence Olivier Award. There have never been any shows as this "Unforgettable" that was involved by major Ja panese crews, with the nomination for the award. "The Hot Shoe Shuffle" the best choreographed was also produced in Japan the same year.
Currently, he continues his work to produce musical, ballet, dance, and concert flying between Japan and England.
